Well as most of you may or may not know that this otakon was my first and what an experience it was. To start things off the convention was huge and I had no idea what i was really going to do for the long weekend. The anime nerd inside of me wanted to see and do everything. The other side of me just wanted to hang out with some cool guys that I’m meeting for the first time irl.

I arrived in Baltimore on Thursday, late afternoon after a few turnarounds and a trip to walmart we were finally there in Baltimore. You could tell otakon was in town because i saw 20-30 people with their passes already. So before I even arrived at the hotel i was excited, both the nerd and lazy side of me. After we arrived at the hotel and we got our passes we decided to go and get some food from a pizza place in the harbor. The meal was reasonable and the food was good and filled me up, but 5$ for a bottle of rolling rock that worm got was pretty outrageous. So after all of that we went to bed around 1am.

Friday was the day that it hit me that otakon was HUGE. Me, Worm, and crew were in the merchants hall and eventually worm and I had to part way with the other 4 people in our group. We ended up in the merch hall for 2 ½ hours just figuring out what we wanted to get when we got up bright and early to hit the merch hall. After that ordeal we eventually pulled ourselves out of the hall we found ourselves looking in on panels and we eventually found a really great one. It was a fan panel for the Japanese company Key (makers of visual novels like Little Buster, Clannad, and ect). during that panel worm talked me into playing little busters when i get home from the con (witch i am). When that ended we wandered back to the room to rest and eat some cup of noodles before we went back to the con for 2 other panels later in the night (hyper happy hentai yuri party, and manga gamers). the hyper happy party was funny because it was a workshop on how to create your own yuri character (so kawaii). Manga Gamers panel was alright, they just show what they were working on for 20 min and a QnA for 40 min. We again headed back to the hotel to rest and get up early for the biggest and most populated day of the con, Saturday.

Saturday, we overslept. It wasn’t a huge deal because we only slept in 1 hour and there was no plans for panels for that time. So when I woke up me and Worm headed straight for the merch hall and did business. The first time I ended up with a Koruneko ⅛ figure that sega had put out. The price for most of the 1/8ths were 30-40$ because most of them you can win in claw games in Japan. As soon as we had gotten what needed, i took a break before i went to a panel. The next panel that I went to was an Anime Figurine panel. This panel got me upset because they were doing giveaways. One of them you had to guess the price in Japanese Yen. He had told us that it was expensive. Someone guessed it was 7500 JPY, thinking that was to low for expensive i threw out ~9000 JPY. I was wrong and the price was 7800 JPY in the end, witch if you know anything about price that not terribly expensive when you’re dropping 120$ on an impulse buy, but oh well. After that I me and worm both went to artist alley for the first time, we looked around and really couldn’t find a great artist. eventually we both found prints of some Madoka art that we both enjoyed. We both got prints of the same character Homura Akemi. Mine taking a more serious view of her and Worm’s a silly one. We found ourselves again in the merchants hall and i was begging my one buddy to loan me 20$ because of an impulse buy of a ⅛th of Mafuyu Shiina (from Seitokai no Ichizon). Lucky for he me loaned the money and I thank him very much. For a 2nd time that day i was heading back to the hotel room for both dinner and to rest before the Type-Moon panel, which me and worm were pretty excited about. We went to the con with a group of about 5 people. The panel was not until 1am so we found ourselves playing portal 2 for 30 min in the video gaming room (were with our other buddy foodnipple<3). To be honest i forgot what we did up to the type-moon panel, that is how great the panel was. Eventually we pulled ourselves back to the hotel and went to bed around 2 or 3 am.

Sunday was the last day of the con. I woke up at 11am and didn’t do much. I walked around the merchants hall for an hour before I went to by something and my card got denied. That killed my mood and i wandered around the con for another hour before heading back to the hotel, for the last time.

All and all otakon was awesome and was everything I expected and more. I was pleased with most things and really enjoyed my time and glad i got to meet a group of really cool people. The highlight of the con was defiantly that, just hanging out with people that are all enthusiast of the internet and anime.

p.s.: for all of thos viewing this blog on rogue squirrel please please check out me and worms anime blog at http://no3dpd.blogspot.com/ if you into that type of thing. B-baka it’s not like I want you to!(last sentence was a joke har har har)

The NBA 2011/12 season is in full swing, and so far there have been quite a number of surprises, with regards to the top teams in the league. So without further ado, here’s my Top 5 Power Rankings for Week 3.

#1: San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs have started the season off hotter than ever, currently undefeated through the first 3 weeks, it’s evident that Coach Popavich has found the right mix of players for this veteran squad. The biggest contributor to their record has to got be the resurgence of the Spurs defense that’s leading the league and allowing an astonishing 0 points per game so far this season. Considering their defense last year had problems stopping teams, especially ones with size (i.e. Dallas, LA, and Memphis), this has been quite the turnaround. If they can keep it up, I don’t see how anyone expects to beat them, it’s simple math: if no one is scoring points on you, you’re likely going to win more games than you’ll lose.

#2: Washington Wizards
Here’s a team no one expected to be ranked #2 in anything, but believe it folks the Wizards might be for real. This young team is looking very strong, sitting atop the Eastern Conference we’ll see if they can keep this pace up all year. The most surprising development is the improvement of John Wall who hasn’t committed a turnover since last season, a big deal for a guy who averaged 3.8 turnovers in his rookie season. This will be a team to watch for the rest of the season.

#3: Dallas Mavericks
The only thing that needs to be said is Dirk McGirk. The man is a beast, plain and simple, he has yet to miss a field goal and I’d say is an early candidate for league MVP. The only surprise from Maverick-land is the fact that Jason Terry has yet to log a minute in a game this season. For a guy who played a big part in the championship run last season, he must’ve really fallen out of favor with the Mavericks coaching staff. Though when asked about it Mavericks Coach, and part-time Jim Carrey impersonator, Rick Carlisle denied that Terry was in the doghouse saying, “It’s a lockout you idiot, no one has logged an NBA minute”. Sounds like a copout to me.

#4: Los Angeles Lakers
It should be no surprise that the Lakers are in the top 5 considering they have 3 all-star caliber players in Kobe Bryant, Metta World Peace (aka Ron Artest) and Pau Gasol. Not to mention sixth man award winner (and Guinness World Record holder for longest marriage to a Kardashian) Lamar Odom coming off the bench. But what is surprising about this Lakers team is that they haven’t missed a free throw this season—a mind-blowing stat for just one player, and even more impressive for an entire team.

#5: Miami Heat
The defending Eastern Conference champions are off to a solid start, largely due to the defensive play of Chris Bosh who’s tied for the league lead in blocks and rebounds. Dwyane Wade continues to be consistent, at the top of the NBA stat chart tied for scoring, steals and minutes. Lebron James, while one of the league leaders in steals and 3-pt percentage, seems unable to overcome his propensity to falter at key times in games failing to even record a stat in the 4th quarter of any game this season. As long as Bosh and Wade continue to play well I guess it wont matter, but one can only wonder how long it’ll be before Lebron’s 4th quarter disappearing act becomes a bigger issue than it currently is.

Exciting photo from, yet another, high-flying NBA season.

So there you have it, my top 5 teams in the NBA as of right now. So far we’ve got a defense that’s allowed 0 points, multiple players yet to miss a shot and an entire team without a missed Free Throw. Truly unprecedented stats at any level of the sport, buy even more so for the professional game where competition level is so much higher. It’s almost like the other teams aren’t even showing up.

Credit should be given where credit is due especially when it comes to great hip hop music. The recent releases of 9th Wonder’s The Wonder Years and Phonte’s Charity Starts At Home are defiantly two solid contributions to the game that must be noted. After the highly publicized fall out between these Little Brother members, this reunion of sorts should not just be noted but celebrated.

Phontigallo and 9th Wonder put out two separate albums but both of them left their mark on each others project. Phonte appeared on two tracks on The Wonder Years: “Band Practice part 2” along with Median and “One Night” along with Terrace Martin and Bird and the The Midnight Falcons. On the flip side, 9th Wonder produced four tracks on Charity Starts At Home: “The Good Fight”,”Not Here Anymore” featuring Eizhi, “Eternally” featuring Median, and “The Life of Kings” featuring Evidence and Big K.R.I.T. Listening to these specific songs is evidence of the high caliber of music that is produced when these two work together. It is reminiscent of the work that they have done together in the past but it shows where both of them are musically today.

9th Wonder is mainly known for his work as a hip hop producer but he has produced widely known R&B tracks for Mary J. Blige’s The Breakthrough, Destiny’s Child’s Destiny Fulfilled, and Erykah Badu “New Amerykah”. He nicely interwove his new R&B tracks with the straight hip hop joints in a such a way that you will bop your head up and down as if there isn’t a difference. Phonte has a history of dabbling on the R&B side of things as well ever since Little Brother’s first album. On Charity Starts At Home he carries on his tradition by singing melodies and harmonies that come across very natural. There are many rappers that do sing their own hooks but Phonte is by far the best to do it.

9th Wonder and Phonte hashing out their issues and getting back in the studio together is only a part of these two artists new albums. The Wonder Years is jam packed with dynamic features from fresh names like Rapsody, Big Remo and Mac Miller to veterans such as Raekwon, Warren G and Talib Kweli. The stand out tracks are “Streets Of Music”, “Piranhas”, “That’s Love”, and “Make It Big” where 9th himself spits a synopsis of his career. Charity Starts At Home’s stand outs are “The Good Fight”, “Everything Is Falling Down”, “Ball and Chain”, and “We Go Off” featuring Pharoahe Monch.

The last couple of years people have been saying that hip hop isn’t dead. That may have been the case but there were only a few good albums to prove that statement. The Wonder Years and Charity Starts At Home are two contributions that serve as supporting evidence. Weather it’s raw beats or raw lyricism you are looking for, either album will suffice. These two albums aren’t just a good look for North Carolina hip hop but hip hop music in general. Everyone should go show their support.
